Muffat Gigue
Note: * show deviations from standard (rule VIII) according to Muffat, on account of the speed. Gives | on 1st note but against standard pattern for dotted triplets. | on 1 maintained.
Montéclair Gigue
Note: in the upper bowing, the double pickup bowing is reversed from Muffat, causing immediate retake. Obviously, speed isn’t only criterion on whether retake is possible or desirable. After that top is mostly as it comes. Most surprising is use of V for beat 1 in almost every measure in the bottom bowing (Rule of down-bow!?) Why not Muffat’s solution? It seems to be most important to Montéclair to use V | for double pickup, sacrificing down-bow on 1 for inexperienced players. (Ending, esp. in top, using V for last note, craquer after long note) Montéclair also shows frequent retakes in mid-measure of his Loure—slow gigue—example (not shown).
