Jean-Pierre Freillon-Poncein, La Véritable Manière d’apprendre à jouer en perfection du hautbois, de la flûte et du flageolet (Paris, 1700). Ex. C excerpt.
Note: There is no corresponding Hotteterre example. H. calls for t on all long notes, including quarters. F-P not only uses t r for unaccented note in long-short pattern in simple triple, but shows it even in the hemiola of the first measure here (Mather leaves off 1st measure in quoting this Ex.), along with the long-short of the faster triple groupings. Three equal notes in triple are done t r t. Parallel to | V | | V | bowing. H. shows t t t even for equal eighths in 3/8.
Quantz, Versuch einer Anweisung die Flöte traversiere zu spielen (Berlin, 1752)Note: This shows Quantz’s standard double-tonguing syllables, did’ll, used in a triplet situation. The pattern seems to be did’ll di as a standard, but a leap calls for adjustment to articulate the leap, as in the first triplet shown. The did’ll di pattern seems to be analogous to F-P’s tu ru tu, although it would presumably be used only where the tempo made double tonguing preferable.
